Industrial compostable packaging breaks down under controlled conditions: high heat, moisture, and microbial activity, usually in 90–180 days.
At-home compostable packaging is designed to break down in a backyard compost bin but often takes longer and may not fully decompose if conditions aren’t ideal. Industrial composting is faster and more reliable for consistent results.
It depends on your goals. Compostable packaging breaks down into natural elements under industrial composting conditions, reducing landfill waste. Recyclable packaging can be reused in new products, reducing the need for virgin materials.
From a practical performance perspective, recyclable pouches deliver higher barrier properties and longer shelf life, making them ideal for products that require extended protection.
Due to the inherent characteristics of raw materials, compostable packaging is better suited for fast‑turnover, short‑shelf‑life products.
- Since recyclable pouches do not contain an aluminum foil layer, they cannot provide full light blocking.
- Currently, recyclable pouches are not suitable for heavy products.
